- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home
- Test alarms monthly by pressing the test button
- Replace batteries at least once a year
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years
Escape Planning
- Create a home fire escape plan with two ways out of each room
- Practice your escape plan at least twice a year
- Designate a meeting spot outside your home
- Teach children how to escape on their own
Kitchen Safety
- Never leave cooking unattended
- Keep flammable items away from the stove
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen
- If a pan catches fire, slide a lid over it and turn off the burner
Electrical Safety
- Don't overload outlets or extension cords
- Replace damaged or frayed electrical cords
- Use surge protectors for electronics
- Never run cords under rugs or furniture
