Essential fire safety & prevention tips

  • Get out, stay out, and call 911 — never go back inside a burning building
  • Smoke Alarms

    • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home
    • Test alarms monthly by pressing the test button
    • Replace batteries at least once a year
    • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years
  • Escape Planning

    • Create a home fire escape plan with two ways out of each room
    • Practice your escape plan at least twice a year
    • Designate a meeting spot outside your home
    • Teach children how to escape on their own
  • Kitchen Safety

    • Never leave cooking unattended
    • Keep flammable items away from the stove
    • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen
    • If a pan catches fire, slide a lid over it and turn off the burner
  • Electrical Safety

    • Don't overload outlets or extension cords
    • Replace damaged or frayed electrical cords
    • Use surge protectors for electronics
    • Never run cords under rugs or furniture
